New Walkway to Billy Bishop Airport, Toronto, July 31, 2015

I had the chance today to check out the new tunnel walkway from the foot of Bathurst St. to the Billy Bishop Island Airport.DSC_0111 A tunnel had been planned in 1935 but was cancelled. More recently a bridge was planned but nixed by a newly elected David Miller. DSC_0103 DSC_0104This current project, which was to open last summer, wound up costing $82.5M (none from taxpayers) and 3 years to complete. DSC_0079The ferry will continue to run every 15 minutes and still holds the honour of being the world’s shortest scheduled ferry run at 90 seconds. DSC_0081
You enter through a terminal of glass and steel, 6 elevators take you down 30 metres, 10 metres of water and 20 metres of bedrock. Next a 260 metre run that should take approximately 6 minutes. Moving sidewalks that move at 2.3km/hr.DSC_0098 The walls are filled with lots of bright signage and ads and of course free wi-fi. You are greeted at the other end with a pair of escalators that take you up into a terminal which is a museum tribute to Billy Bishop himself.DSC_0095 DSC_0088

Artifacts, statues and this replica of a Nieuport 17 which reminds one that just looking around at the aircraft coming and going on this little island airport, we have come a very long way.DSC_0093 And if you come here from above, or on, you can now get here from underneath too!DSC_0105 DSC_0107~ As always, Enjoy Toronto!~
