The event was the taping of a new show, currently in the works, called In The Room. The setting was the Glenn Gould theatre. The show is hosted by Rafael Kalamat and Jason Barbeck, both actors and the show’s producers. The show is an industry roundtable discussion featuring some of Canada’s finest stars. This was the second episode of the new series. The group was as diverse as it could get. From Art Hindle (Black Christmas,Faceoff, Murder She Wrote, ENG) who has been acting for forty seven years to a beautiful nineteen year old Zoe deGrand Maison(Orphan Back, Murdoch Mysteries, Rookie Blue, Bad Hair Day(tv movie)) . Shawn Doyle of Endgame and many television appearances(Rookie Blue, Covert Affairs & Reign). Tantoo Cardinal (Dances With Wolves, Legends Of The Fall, Blackstone), Philip Moran ( Total Recall ) and Kris Holden-Ried ( Lost Girl, The Listener, The Tudors ) rounded out the cast. The affable hosts conducted the show in a very comfortable , easy paced Q & A session that covered a host of topics and seemed to get the actors to feel comfortable with sharing their very diverse histories in the industry.
When I asked both Jason and Rafael what their vision was for the future of the show they both agreed they wanted to create a platform to highlight Canadian actors to their audience. Kris Holden-Ried told me he was happy to have such a strong industry so close to home because as the father of a seven year old son he didn’t want to travel all over. Toronto has lots of filming being done and if we are to be “Hollywood North” it is nice to get to meet these great talented stars. In true Toronto fashion I got to ride the 504 streetcar home with the lovely Zoe deGrand Maison and talk about film and as I looked at her wonderful smile I knew she would be lighting up screens for many years to come.
As always,enjoy Toronto
