Well it’s finally happened! I’m a blog ! As a born Torontonian have always loved my city! My memories of sights, sounds, smells of various parts of the city evoke specific thoughts and memories. I have always loved photography but only recently have really begun to love it as much as I do. Someone had given me a decent camera as a gift years ago just prior to a winter driving journey to British Columbia and back. I just couldn’t get the thing to work by hook or crook. I researched, read the manual again and again but in the end was about one step from selling the damn thing online and moving on. Earlier this year a good friend of mine came to visit. She is an avid painter and photographer and did her best to help. her suggestion that my lens may not be compatible with my camera, even though they were the same brand got us to switch lenses from one of her Nikons to mine . Suddenly my camera took on a new life ! I have since refallen in love with takings photos !
In conversations with my sister , who relocated to Calgary with her family I sensed that she missed Toronto a lot. I have since spoken to many old friends that have left Toronto, some longer ago, some recently and always get a sense that we all miss our city when we go away. This experience started as a project of mine to not only share my city with my friends but to also keep them a bit more up to date. I will post more cityscapes as I edit them. I avoid all the ” Big Ticket” events. I believe there is plenty of those shots already available. My focus has been to shoot the city as it goes about it’s daily routines. Simple things likes markets, streets, etc. You will notice I have a love for old masonry work. Back from the days when craftsmanship mattered. Buildings tell stories. People live stories and I hope that the shots I have taken of people show that.
I will begin with High Park . Fair to say , my sister’s and my favourite place of our childhoods. My parents fell in love with the place just after they moved here in the 50’s. We went there often , all seasons , all weather and always had fun ! When I had the opportunity to move into the neighborhood adjacent to it my own love for the place has been renewed . In the last many years I have walked my dogs there daily. Have met all manner of wildlife and birds. The park is an absolute jewel of a place. From stands of ancient and rare Black Elms , an array of fauna , ponds and watershed areas it represents some of the things that may have lived here in much greater numbers in years gone by but still manage to thrive with the train going by to the south, roads and highway within a stones throw and the traffic chopper above.
My goal is to continue to take and share pictures of my favourite city ! My home ! I hope these pics make you feel like I did when I took them. My new love for photography has also opened a new door. Not bad for a mid 50’s male. I would love to hear feedback and suggestions. If it is possible to make a living with my photography I am interested and very open minded . I do love honest feedback !!
Please enjoy, and maybe some of these shots can encourage you to visit Toronto and for those who are already here encourage you to get out and explore a neighbourhood or a market or any of the thousands of events that make this city such a cool place!!
